Whenever I receive a writing assignment, I would feel ecstatic for several reasons. First of all, writing is one of my hobbies. I love to write essays, compositions, and even poems, so even lengthy writing assignments will not matter as long as I am interested on the given topic. Second, writing is a good alternative for me to spend my free time rather than spending it playing online games at the Internet cafe. With that, I get to polish my writing skills and at the same time have fun with doing it. Screw DotA; I'm sick of getting "pawned" all the time. Finally, doing a writing assignment can be an easy way to get a good grade. I don't know why some of my classmates think writing is harder compared to memorizing but I beg to differ. All I need to do is to know my topic, know the rules in grammar, express my opinion, and write it on a piece of paper, which in my opinion, is easier compared to memorizing intricate terms, nomenclatures, and formulas over and over again.
Writing can be a very painful and torturous experience. For one thing, to write something about a topic that I do not have any clue or a topic that does not interest me can result to aimless writing and tedious planning. At times, I think too much that I would end up drooling on my desk with my head aching, so writing something that does not appeal to me would certainly take awhile. Topics such as "How is my love life", "How is my summer vacation" and "my most embarrassing experience" do not appeal to me at all so you can just forget it. Another thing is that sometimes, I tend to use inappropriate tenses, misspell words, and misuse grammar structures. At times, I mix up the "he" from "she". I think you get the picture when you're getting laughed at by your grammar teacher just because you screwed up some pronouns. It's embarrassing so to speak. Furthermore, I wind up scratching my head with impatience and disgruntlement after seemingly endless hours of thinking and drafting. If I spend a lot of time just thinking of an ideal topic sentence, then I know I am in serious trouble. If I experience the so-called "writer's block", then I better brace myself for a long day.
On the other hand, writing can also be a pleasurable thing for me to do in order to find leisure for myself. I can express whatever I want to convey my happiness, disgust, and indifference towards a topic. I could write about how proud I am that I passed the UPCAT, ACET, and USTET. In addition, writing is a good way to relieve myself of any emotional tensions like recent friendship conflicts, and failed marks on exams. I could go on writing about how much I'm pissed off at one of my classmates for revealing my secrets or how much I despised the recent Social Science exam. As long as I can let off steam, then it's all good. I can express my opinions thorough writing the things that I can't clearly express through speaking. I could also state my acclamations and objections toward the municipality's ordinances, the Arroyo administration's decision-making, and the claim that LeBron James is better than Kobe Bryant. Lastly, writing is a cheap recreational activity. All I need to write is at least a clean piece of paper, a clear pen, and a durable desk; what more can I ask for?
I realized that writing is one of the most important skills for every individual to possess. Besides impressing the readers of the correct grammar and "word plays", writing is one effective tool in disseminating information efficiently. With it, I can get my point across in an argument without looking like an ignorant fool. Ideas and concepts mean nothing if they are not put into words in the first place. Therefore, I consider writing as important as the food I eat, the water I drink and the air I breathe because despite its wonders and horrors, I cannot deny the fact that writing is an essential skill to gain, nurture, and possess. So whether I like it or not, I better learn to love writing or just despise it and live in the abyss of ignorance.
